A while back, I participated in a week-long digital painting “challenge”. The goal was to learn how to create an image of a person that was realistic but featured my own unique style.

Tracing was expressly forbidden. We could use a reference image, but the painting had to be done using brushes. I chose to use Adobe Photoshop CC to complete the project.

The girl in my reference didn’t look exactly like the one I drew. First, she didn’t have aquamarine eyes; they were deep brown. I decided that the lighter color was much more striking. The original woman didn’t have heavy eyeliner; I added this to play the eyes up even more.

I used a subtle texture brush to add dimension to her skin and several brushes specially designed for painting hair to create her tresses.
