The Fairmount House

I had the rare opportunity to photograph the Fairmount House, a private residence that sits atop Michigan Hill in Madison, Indiana.


The grand Victorian mansion was originally built in 1872 by Aurelius H. Gibson, who was in the timber and barrel stave business. The inside of the house features a different kind of wood trim in each room, stained glass windows, and solid cherry doors. The exterior features white stonework, a round turret on the back corner, two third-story balconies, and a large patio overlooking the Ohio River.


I took this HDR (high dynamic range) photograph by setting up a tripod and taking a range of exposures with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel SLR camera. I later put the shots into Adobe Photoshop, where I used the Merge to HDR Pro function to create the incredibly detailed photograph below.
